How to come up with a group name? The foolproof formula revealed
The best formula to name a Facebook group is –
Pain point / Passion area + Target Audience
I’ll take the example of our community, Growth and Monetisation for Facebook Group Admins.
Here, the pain point is growth and monetisation.
And the target audience is Facebook group admins.
We combined them to form a name that’s easy and explicitly tells who the group is for and what problem it helps solve.
To look at another example, I’ll pick the Facebook group, Kids Nutrition and Recipes, the largest parenting community in India.
The pain point is the name itself, i.e. kids’ nutrition and recipes.
Clearly, all the mommies and to-be mommies looking for nutrition and food-related information for their kids would be willing to join the group.
Easy, right?
Keep in mind these 3 things when choosing your Facebook group name
The name of your Facebook group is the first thing people notice about your community.
(Along with the cover photo)
So, make sure that you chose a name that is simple, easy to remember, and resonates with your audience.
Keep it simple and tell ‘what your group is about’
First things first.
Fancy names are a big no-no when it comes to choosing one for your Facebook group.
It’s all about reaching to your potential members.
Your Facebook group’s name must be extremely easy, something that your audience relates with, right at the moment they see it.
Simultaneously, it should tell what your group is about.
Let’s take the example of a food group named, Delhi Foodiez.
Isn’t the name short and simple?
Besides, it clearly tells that the group is for all those who consider themselves foodies and reside in the capital city, Delhi.
Got my point?
Use keywords in your group name
When you do that, Facebook will start showing your group in the suggestions to the people who have searched for that particular keyword.
From there, people are highly likely to join your group.
Now, I know you’re probably thinking:
How do I search for keywords on Facebook?
There aren’t any tools to search for keywords for Facebook.
Well, you don’t have to search for keywords on Facebook.
Look up for the keywords in your niche on Google. (Also, pay attention to the Google suggestions that you see on the SERP below)
The people searching for those terms on Google are ideally the ones searching for them on Facebook too.
So, list down the keywords and check their search volume.
Go ahead and pick the one that matches your group intent and has a significant volume.
Let’s say you want to create a female-only Facebook group around weight loss or want to change the name of your existing one.
Just go and search for weight loss on Google and you’ll get all the related keywords.
Next, go to Keyword Planner and check the volume for each of these keywords.
It even tells how competitive each of the keywords is.
As you can see, each of these keywords have a pretty high search volume.
Now, go ahead and choose the one that matches your group’s intent.
Suggestion: If you wish to create a group on foods and exercises that help in weight loss, you can name it as: ‘Weight Loss Exercises and Foods for Women’
Name your FB group after your product (if you are a brand)
Agreed, your loyal customers trust you. Hence, they are a part of your Facebook group.
But, what about the potential customers?
They might not have heard about you therefore, they would be reluctant to join your Facebook group.
But, if you name your Facebook group after your products or your audience’s pain point, they are more likely to join it.
After all, you are solving your audience’s problems via your brand. Isn’t it?
For instance, WhiteHat Jr, an online kids coding platform, has a public Facebook group, WhiteHat Jr Coding for Kids.
Here, the passion area is coding for kids.
They have used it (the passion area) to name their group along with the brand name (i.e. WhiteHat Jr) which is just perfect.
Not only does the name attract parents searching for coding for kids but also helps in brand recall.
Apart from these 3 things, make sure that your cover photo is attractive enough and in sync to the group name.
People make up their minds in seconds whether they’d like to join a Facebook group or not just by looking at the group name and its cover photo.
That said, make sure your group’s cover photo has Facebook group name on it and the visuals (if any) revolve around its theme.

FAQs on changing group name on Facebook
How to change group name after 5000 members?
Unfortunately, you cannot change your group name if you have a Facebook group with more than 5,000 members.
According to Facebook,
“We don’t allow admins to change a group’s name when the group reaches 5,000 members to prevent abuse. We do this because closed and public group names, members and group descriptions are visible to anyone and may be seen as part of someone’s identity on Facebook.”
However, you can make slight edits here and there (like spelling correction, adding emoji or anything alike) to the existing name.
Ques. I’m unable to change the name of my Facebook group. I have less than 5,000 members and I last changed its name 3 months ago. What should I do?
Ans. In this case, you can try any of these hacks:
- Make sure your Facebook app is updated (in mobile) and you have a strong internet connection.
- Troubleshoot, i.e. clear cache in the browser, login again to your group and then try to change the name (in both laptop and mobile).
- Download the Facebook Lite app in your mobile, login to your account, and then change the name.
- Wait for sometime (probably a day) and then try changing the name of your group. Technical glitches usually take some time to get resolved.
- Ask the other admin of your group to change the name. In case you don’t have one, make someone (whom you trust) the admin for the time being, ask them to change the name, and remove them later as admin.
If neither of these tricks work, then you should report to the problem to Facebook. They will look into the issue and resolve it.
That’s all about it.🙌🏻
